Do you ever get a disturbing feeling when a colleague receives a promotion you wanted? Or your best friend is planning her wedding while you’re not even in a steady relationship? An envious attitude can be unpleasant, but it can also have its upside.
If you tap into the positivity of the emotion, envy can provide insights you can use to understand yourself better and enhance your relationships. Here’s how you can prevent and manage those nagging resentments:
(1) Ask for advice! So forget about beating your competition. You’ll have more to show for your efforts if you concentrate on learning from them. So if a friend launches a new business, invite them out to lunch so you can pick up some pointers.
(2) Are you living vicariously through your friends? Coveting your friends’ exotic travels or their resilience in taking adult education courses? Well that could reveal what you really want to be doing. Pursue your own dreams with a plan that fits your budget and your schedule. It’s more satisfying to take action than sit on the sidelines.
(3) Adjust your attitude! If you feel life is unfair and you deserve the good fortune that others experience – change your reaction. It will make you feel more buoyant and content. Because some events are beyond your control, but you can decide how you respond to them.
So stop envy from turning you into a green-eyed monster. Head off those resentments before they begin. And channel any and all competitive feelings in a positive direction.
